PANJIM: The Goa State Human Rights Commission (GSHRC) has directed the Goa police to investigate into allegations of false arrest of three Nigerians who were among 50 others who were booked for attempted murder and rioting in the aftermath of the blocking of the highway at Porvorim recently.
The Nigerians, lodged in three separate jails ~ Aguada, Sada and Mapusa lock-up ~ in connection with the October 31 Porvorim mob rampage case have accused the police of falsely implicating them in the case. Some were released on bail subsequently.
The trio ~ Aname Innocent, Okoro Ndidi and Sunday Onye Lucky ~ had alleged that the police “advised” them to take shelter in Mapusa police station to protect themselves from the angry locals but they were later arrested. They had also clarified in their statement to the GSHRC they were not at the rioting spot on the national highway at Porvorim on October 31.
The commission registered the case on November 12 and in their further hearing have now asked the police department to investigate into all the allegations and submit a report to it.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar appreciated the police for sensibly handling the situation and arresting them without resorting to lathi charge or violence.
