MARGAO: In an attempt to break the impasse at Cavrem due to the villagers’ agitation, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar met the agitating locals at the Assembly complex late Monday evening and agreed to stop the transportation of ore from Cavrem.
The meeting was convened against the backdrop of recent protests at Cavrem, which saw locals getting arrested. Additionally, panch Ravindra Velip was arrested and allegedly assaulted by police in jail.
While some locals were arrested for stopping ore transportation from Cavrem, around 40 locals were arrested again last week for protesting the action against Velip and others earlier.
Finally, on Parsekar’s invitation, many locals went to the Assembly complex to meet the CM, who was accompanied Sanguem MLA Subhash Phal Dessai and officials of the Directorate of Mines and Geology. Phal Dessai and the locals have been at loggerheads for the last few weeks.
Parsekar agrees to stop ore transportation from Cavrem
A delegation of the locals, including Velip, attended the meeting and they maintained that they had been protesting the allegedly illegal transportation of e-auctioned ore from the Cavrem mines.
They gave a detailed presentation on the same and claimed that there were blatant irregularities with regard to the inventory. They alleged that the quantity of ore was more than double of what was being measured by the Mines Department.
After the meeting, Velip and the others stated that the CM had conceded that the Mines and Geology Department needed to do proper checks and that the CM gave an oral order to stop ore transportation from Tuesday until an inquiry is completed.
Parsekar has also called the villagers for a meeting on Tuesday evening at his official residence, where Mines and Geology Director Prasanna Acharya will be present. The CM promised that they would discuss their long-standing demand that the authorities immediately register ‘The Sadhana Multipurpose Co-op Society’ and allow the transportation of the e-auctioned ore through the society.
The locals also demanded that the police immediately register an FIR and suspend the authorities of Sada sub-jail, and inquire into the Velip’s assault.
Velip has also called for action against GMC for medical negligence. He stated that when he went for a check-up after the assault, the doctor had brushed aside his injuries, but after suffering severe pain, Velip had to undergo surgery for multiple fractures on his arm.
The locals also demanded the suspension of PI Pravin Gawas and PSI Vinayak Patil from the Quepem police station and an inquiry into the assault of tribal villagers when they were in the custody of Quepem police on April 6.
The locals expressed satisfaction at the meeting with Parsekar, but are waiting for their demands to be fulfilled.
