PANJIM: Safety norms are being flouted by the contractor who is executing the work to replace the roof of passenger bays of the Kadamba bus terminus in Panjim.
When the O Heraldo team visited the city bus stand, it was seen that the workers engaged in the work were working without wearing basic safety helmets, gloves and shoes. Pedestrians were seen walking right under the bus bay where the work was being carried out as the area was not barricaded. It was observed that the contractor just used a nylon cloth rope to cordon off the area.

It is pertinent to note that most of the plastic roof sheets of passenger bays had blown off two years ago and the government through the services of a contractor is currently replacing it.
There are no proper signages and the pavements are encroached by the vendors, fruit and vegetable sellers causing inconvenience to the daily commuters. Some of the platforms are broken, particularly ones from where the local buses ply, and they are in need of renovation.
“The parking space meant for persons with disability (PwDs) is occupied by vehicles belonging to non-PwDs. Kadamba Transport Corporation is earning huge revenue through rent of shops, through the toll that is being collected, pay parking etc. But they are not doing enough to address these issues despite raising it repeatedly,” Co-ordinator of GOACAN Roland Martins said.
He pointed out that the bus stand premises are littered and there is no round the clock cleanliness maintained by the concerned authorities.
He urged the authorities to address these issues at the earliest.
