PANJIM: After almost a year, the Crime branch has apprehended a West Bengal native in the horrific Mapusa jeweller’s murder case.
Ramnath Raikar owner of Kamaxi Jewellers was fatally stabbed by assailants in September 2012, who posed as customers. They later decamped with gold weighing nearly 3 kgs. Goa police had declared a reward of Rs 25,000 to those providing information or clues leading to the arrest of those involved.
The 28-year-old identified as Sahidul Ismael was picked up from his hometown and brought to Goa Monday afternoon by the crime branch team.
Sources said CB officials were camping there for more than two days and finally netted him. The suspect is said to be an artisan and was supposed to have been close to the victim and was apparently being tracked for months by the CB sleuths.
Police Inspector Sunita Sawant confirmed the arrest.
“He was close to the deceased and went missing two months after the fatal attack on the jeweler. He had escaped to his native village at West Bengal,” she said.
The suspect has been remanded to 14 days police custody.
