The Margao Municipal Council has bought two tippers for the purpose of dry waste collection from the various wards. The tippers have been bought from the 13th finance commission grants received in 2015. The MMC has put in another Rs 6 lakh for the procurement of the tippers. These tippers will exclusively collect dry waste and take it to the plant for processing.
The MMC Chairperson, Babita Angle has expressed happiness and optimism on the solving of the problem as the infrastructure of MMC is now improving in the garbage collection sector. “We have written again to the Directorate of Municipal Councils to grant the infrastructure which every successful council has been asking for by means of resolutions during council meetings and other correspondence. I am urging the DMA to help us out with machinery which we have asked for as the MMC has taken the collection of waste as the prime responsibility for the town,” said the Chairperson.
The Margao Municipal Council after being rejected funds by the Directorate of Municipalities for garbage collection outsourcing started a different model of segregated waste collection on a trial
basis.
The MMC now collects dry garbage from households twice a week from 1 to 10pm. Two open trucks for collection of this dry waste which were ordered at the outset of this project have now arrived.
The dry garbage will be now be collected by these trucks on prescribed days from the transit stations in every ward and will be taken to the plant at Sonsoddo for further segregation and then bailing.
