MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council on Monday has called for increasing the number of municipal wards taking into account the rise in the voter population and to rectify the discrepancies in the existing wards.
At the special meeting of the Council on Monday, Councillors were unanimous in their demand for extension of the existing 20 wards and do justice to certain wards which are heavily populated compared to other wards.
Participating in the discussions, Councillor Tito Cardozo drew attention of the Council to the fact that Ward no 9 represented by him has the highest number of voters compared to wards which have votes less than 2,500. He also underlined the need to rectify the discrepancies, saying that some wards are not contiguous as mandated by the rules.
Councillors Sadanand Naik and Pratima Coutinho pointed out they were representing large percentage of voters as compared to other wards and hence wanted proper demarcation and delimitation of the wards.
Meanwhile, the Council today unanimously resolved to allot 600 sq mts of land for the construction of St Francis Chapel on the acquired land for parking at Madel after shifting the same from the main road. Councilllor Gonzaco Rebello said the Council should allot minimum 600 sq mts of land for the chapel taking into account the sentiments of the local populace.
The meeting decided to discuss the charter of demands presented by the civic employees under the banner of Goa Municipal Employees Association, but declined to accept the demand for a hike in the medical allowance.
