CALANGUTE: The owner of a property at Sinquerim has been illegally cutting forest trees in a no-development area on the slope of a hill, according to a Calangute-based NGO.
More than 50 trees have already been cut in the last few days and the illegal activity has continued even after they lodged a complaint with the range forest officer, forest department at Campal, Panjim, according to Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF) members.

“The owners of property in survey no 81/1D at Sinquerim, Candolim, are engaged in illegal activity of felling of trees in no-development slope of Sinquerim hill. The area is a green habitat of village Candolim and rich in bio-diversity which has been destroyed and more than 50 trees have been cut,” Candolim resident Agnelo Barreto, a CCF member, said in his complaint to the forest department.
The CCF has urged the authorities to initiate “strict action against the violators and stop further felling of trees to protect the village environment.”
