PANJIM: St Savio Sports Club, Calangute booked the quarter-finals berth in the 43rd Bandodkar Memorial football tournament defeating Mormugao United Sports Club, Vasco 2-1, at MPT ground, Baina-Vasco, on Tuesday.
It was a one sided match, St Savio SC were too good for the opponents, which mostly consisted of young footballers.
St Savio SC went into the lead in the 12th minute with Ashwyn D’Souza opening the account.
In the16th minute, Paulo Siqueira of Mormugao United SC had a chance to come to level terms, however he shot wide. Lyod Rebello of Mormugao United SC squandered an opportunity to net in the 22nd minute.
However, he managed to equalise in the 33rd minute with a curling shot which was fed by Pritesh Mayekar taking the score to 1-1.
Pedro Gonsalves of St Savio SC made an attempt in the rival goal but to his dismay the ball landed in the goalkeeper’s hand in the 48th minute.
Aniket Mandrekar of St Savio SC took piercing shot from inside the box, however, goalkeeper of Mormugao United SC Suleman Sheikh made a brilliant save in the 50th minute.
This time Aniket managed to send the ball at the back of the net with a curling shot from inside the box which was passed by Ashley Lobo, increasing the tally to 2-1, in the 52nd minute.
Preetesh Mayenkar’s effort went off the target in the 55th minute for Mormugao United SC.
Earlier, chief guest Nilesh Navelkar, councillor of Mormugao Municipal Council, was introduced to the players.
Lyod Rebello of Mormugao United Sports Club was awarded man-of-the-match by Sudesh Narvekar, Police Inspector (Traffic), Vasco.
