Escaped Vasco jailbirds made merry by wining and dining

SANGUEM, AUG 7
The quite village of Kalay in Sanguem was awakened on Saturday by the startling news that two of the three fugitives, who had escaped from the Sada jail on Thursday, had stayed in a house in their village for two days.
Incidentally, no one in the village was initially aware that the two fugitives — Abhijit Patil and Seby Ferrao — were hiding in the heart of the village.
Located barely about 100 metres from the railway track and about 200 metres from the Kalay railway station, the house has no lights and water connection. While two sides of the house are neglected with overgrown bushes, there is an internal road adjacent to one side of the house.
Going by the situation inside the house, which reportedly belonged to Abhijit Patil’s close relative, the fugitives seem to have made merry, wined and dined, but revealing no clue even to the next door neighbour.
Empty beer and wine bottles, scrambled eggs, bread, vegetables and used utensils were found in the kitchen of the house. There were two pairs of brand new slippers inside the house.
There is also a gas cylinder which the fugitives used to cook. But from where they got the gas cylinder to operate the stove still remains a mystery.
A woman residing in the locality informed that she was surprised and shocked to see a number of policemen raiding the house on Friday night and arresting one of the fugitives.
“We had no clue whatsoever that the fugitives were hiding in the house till the time the policemen raided the house and arrested one of the accused,” the woman told Herald.
Sources informed Herald that the other accused person, Seby Ferrao, was also hiding in the same house, but managed to escape from police under the cover of darkness.
According to one theory, the hideout, however, could have gone unnoticed were it not for a tussle that allegedly broke out between the duo during the night of Abhijit Patil’s arrest.
Sources informed that the villagers reportedly overheard a fight between the duo and alerted the police of the incident, which consequently led to the arrest of Abhijit Patil.
