PANJIM: A major restructuring of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with responsibility and accountability at various levels will be undertaken from next month, beginning its preparations for the 2017 assembly elections. The new leaders would be asked to reach out to prospective voters from all segments and age-groups.
During the two-day BJP National Executive held in Bangalore on April 3 and 4, the senior leaders have advised all the State units to go for major restructuring of the party right from booth level to the State president.
While in case of Goa, the fresh election process to appoint heads at different level will begin from May, BJP’s top leaders are keen to give yet another term to its present party chief Vinay Tendulkar, who will be completing three years in chair in August, this year.
Speaking to Herald from New Delhi, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that party will undertake massive organizational changes right from booth level to appointing its leaders at the district level. “But at the State level, we would like Tendulkar to continue in chair for another three years,” Parsekar said adding that the national executive has stressed over need for organizational restructuring. Tendulkar was elected as party president in 2012, after party was voted to power.
The recently held Zilla Panchayat elections gave major blow to ruling BJP in most of its dominated constituencies, including those ruled by them at present. The internal fights of the booth level workers, resulting into rebellions, also played a spoil spot for the party. BJP, along with its alliance partners managed to win only 25 seats of the total 50 it contested, sending clear signal for party to restructure its organization.
However, Chief Minister rubbished any such reason for the organizational changes. “The three-year tenure of all the committees stands almost complete. We have to go for fresh elections now. Also keeping in mind the 2017 elections, we need to strengthen our organization,” he said.
When contacted, BJP president said that the election process for booth, constituency, district and State level would begin from next month.
Tendulkar indicted that a major programme to make grassroots contact with the people would be launched by the party, and everyone, including ministers, would be expected to make the effort.
