MAPUSA: Mapusa Municipal Council in collaboration with Bharat Scouts and Guide held an awareness campaign on single use plastic, recently.
Scout and Guides Students of different schools of Bardez went house to house and shop to shop to create awareness.
The campaign was followed by a concluding function at Ram Manohar Lohia garden in Mapusa where municipal Chairman Ryan Braganza administered oath to all students on refusal of disposable plastic.
“We need to change our behaviour towards single use plastic. There is a need for us to take examples from other States and countries and try and implement it in Goa,” Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza said.
D’Souza further said, “Plastic is a global problem which everyone is facing. It is not only contaminating the water bodies but also present in food that we consume. People are now changing their attitude towards plastic. People have now started using eco-friendly items as an alternative to plastic and are to switching natural things an alternative to straw, disposables dishes and more”.
The Director of Directorate of Municipal Administration Dr Tariq Thomas also appealed to the students to ask their parents to carry reuse friendly bags while they go out to buy things.
“We all have to work towards reducing plastic by motivating our parents to carry a bag from home while every time they go out to buy something resulting the shopkeeper will not be in position to sell bags,” he said.
