PONDA: A female hippopotamus died at the Bondla wild life sanctuary after a fight with its male companion, two days ago.
However, Bondla wild life authorities and the staff kept the death of the female hippo a secret.
The news of the death came to light when visitors were prevented from visiting the hippos whose enclosure remained closed.
When asked why they were not allowed to see the hippos and why the hippo enclosure remained closed, the staff maintained that the enclosure was undergoing repairs and that the hippos were housed in another safe place.
However, after persistent questioning a forest official informed that the female hippo died after a fight with a male hippo.
A pair of hippos was brought from Mysore in 2013 after a lot of efforts and they were a star attraction at the Bondla wild life sanctuary.
