‘Police booked assaulters under wrong section’

MARGAO: Babai Naik, brother of Sharmila Naik, has alleged that the police have deliberately not invoked Section 307 in the assault case against Sharmila Naik only to help the accused persons whose relatives are working in the police department.
Briefing media persons, he said on May 21, 2019 Sharmila was found lying in the forest and was bleeding from her face and head where she had obviously been hit with some object. Sharmila had gone to collect cashews in the morning and was found in the forest by another person who had gone there for the same purpose.
Before losing consciousness Sharmila had reportedly named Rukmani and her daughter Priti Naik as her assailants. The two families have inimical relationship and a few days earlier Priti reportedly had a fight with Sharmila.
Babai said that the police registered a case against Rukmani and Priti for grievously causing injury but did not book them for attempt to murder so that they could easily get bail as they did and alleged that this was done because their relatives are working for the police department.
