Calangute: The Calangute panchayat has appealed to tourism stakeholders not to dump garbage on roads and fields during the ongoing peak season after a popular beachside restaurant, Tipsy, was fined Rs 25,000 when its workers were found dumping garbage on the road near the market recently.
Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira said they have a garbage monitoring squad which caught two of the restaurant workers emptying a big bag of garbage by the roadside in the night on Christmas eve.

“The panchayat squad informed me and asked the boys where they are from. They said Tipsy restaurant from the beach. The next day, we sent a letter to the restaurant to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 and they came and paid the amount,” he said.
He said the panchayat is forced to fine hoteliers and others caught dumping garbage on roads and fields to create awareness about keeping Calangute clean. “We don’t want this type of money, but our Calangute to be clean and green. I’m appealing to the people of Calangute ‘please do not throw garbage on the roads’. We’ve kept people to collect garbage door-to-door. If still they don’t come, then people can call me directly and I will come personally. Specially during this season, please don’t dump garbage,” he said.
