LET PEACE PREVAIL

As the world just started to recover from the devastating consequences of the pandemic COVID-19, another conflict has erupted, this time in the age-old strife between Israel and Palestine. The pandemic had brought the world to a standstill affecting the lives and livelihood of millions and also taught us the importance of compassion, global cooperation and solidarity in the face of a common threat. But rather than taking a lesson from the pandemic’s aftermath, which brought into sharp focus on the importance of unity, we find ourselves embroiled in war and devastation once again.

The latest conflict in Israel and Palestine and the ongoing war in Russia and Ukraine serve as a reminder of the need for peaceful solutions.

Some may feel a sense of victory if they believe that the war achieved their strategic or political goals and they may view the loss of innocent lives as an unfortunate but necessary consequence. We still continue to observe, inside our borders, sporadic disputes and clashes between regions over trivial matters in an attempt to assert our dominance or power hunger without considering the dire implications that could follow.

We have seen throughout history how ineffective war is at settling conflicts. Numerous disputes have erupted, causing immeasurable destruction and loss of life, only to leave issues unsolved. From the devastating World Wars to more recent regional conflicts, the evidence is clear: war brings destruction, not solutions. War knows no boundaries affecting not only fighters but also innocent civilians. The sufferings of those caught in the crossfire serves as a sobering reminder of the destruction brought about by wars. Families are torn apart, cities are reduced to rubble and the entire generations are scarred by the trauma of violence. War takes a tremendous toll on both human lives and financial resources.

Rebuilding in the wake of conflict is a herculean task that involves not just only restoring the physical infrastructure but also mend the emotional and social damage. The destruction caused by war can take years to repair. War leaves wounds that can remain for decades, particularly when it results in the deaths of innocent people. Families are shattered, communities are disrupted and psychological trauma lingers.

Peace holds immeasurable power when it comes to problem-solving. People and movements have demonstrated throughout history that significant change may be achieved by nonviolent means. It is critical to remember that war with its destructive might cannot be the ultimate solution to the problems we face. Dialogue, not destruction should be our first choice. It highlights the urgency of finding a just and lasting resolution to the complex and deeply rooted issues. True victory comes from preserving life, ensuring security and advancing enduring peace rather than from causing destruction. By engaging in constructive dialogue, people can better understand each other perspectives and work towards finding a solution that benefits both the sides. The path to a better world, one filled with understanding and prosperity, is paved with Peace.
