PORVORIM: The Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) charged with the sexual assault of his niece was on Tuesday arrested by Mapusa Police and later suspended from duty in the connection.
The tainted cop surrendered before the Mapusa police on Tuesday afternoon and he was booked under Sections 354, 509, 376, 506 and 306 of Indian Penal Code.
Police sources told Herald that the PSI has been kept in the Anjuna lockup as there is no such facility at the new Mapusa police station. He will be produced before the court on Wednesday for a remand.
Following his arrest, DGP Kishan Kumar issued an order suspending the PSI from duty.
Police sources stated that rules necessitate the Mapusa Police to seek the services of a government officer to act as a witness, since the accused is a government employee.
Police had requested a PWD engineer to stand as a
witness, but he flatly refused to do so. The police have asked the engineer to give it in writing that he had refused to act as a witness.
It may be recalled that the police sub-inspector has been accused of sexually assaulting his 19-year-old niece since January at Mapusa.
