PANJIM: Taking offence to the manner in which condom commercials have been displayed on buses run by the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL), the Goa State Commission for Women has decided to issue notices to the district collectors to remove the posters with immediate effect.
Speaking to Herald, Commission Chairperson Vidhya Shet Tanavade said notices to both District Collectors as well as KTCL would be served on Wednesday. “If any agency needs to create awareness on the use of condoms, it should be sensitively handled. An advertisement cannot be obscene in public domain,” she said.
The move comes after a women’s organization, taking cognizance of a Herald report on February 24, approached the commission seeking intervention into the matter.
Herald had reported that some educationists took objection to the promotion of ‘Manforce condom’ advertisements as some of these buses also ply school students. They had demanded replacing the poster featuring former adult star-turned-actress Sunny Leone next to the condom pack with advertisements on education.
The corporation, that received support from a few modern educationists, had justified saying sex education is a part of the curriculum.
