PANJIM: Alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party government was heedlessly borrowing to cater to social schemes, social activist Sudip Tamankar claimed that every resident of Goa has been burdened with a Rs 29,000 debt in the last three years.
Addressing the media, Tamankar stated that in the last three years the government has borrowed Rs 4408 crore which is being spent on various schemes. He said the information has been sourced from financial documents obtained through the Right to Information Act.
He said the government has not made any efforts to increase revenue and it is due to this that the State is in a crisis.
The figures furnished by the government are quite shocking, he said. In last three years the government has obtained Rs 2393,51,45,400 as market loan, Rs 118,04,00,000 loan as NSSF loan, Rs 497,09,64,000 as central loan, Rs 339,92,54,300 as NABARD loan and Rs 1059, 67,00,000 from Reserve Bank of India. The total amount in the last three years comes to Rs 4408,24,63,700.
Tamankar also stated that there was no plan to increase the revenue and some government departments had taken loans from EDC. Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) has taken a Rs 170 crore loan from EDC, Infotech Corporation has taken Rs 125 crore, Kadamba Transport Corporation has taken Rs 15 crore, Goa Educational Development Corporation has taken Rs 5 crore and Sports Authority of Goa has taken Rs 150 crore as loan from EDC.
Besides, GSIDC has even taken a loan of Rs 250 crore from HDFC bank and Rs 50 crore from Indian Bank.
