MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council has failed to create convenient and safe passages for customers in the municipal markets as a result cases of pick pocketing have been increasing, particularly in the new markets.
Margao Police have been registering such cases as missing complaints.
Usually, Margao markets face a heavy rush of customers from various parts of Salcete for making purchases of essential items and household articles. However, moving in the market has become difficult due to encroachment upon the municipal land made by the vendors.
“The market inspectors, supervisors posted on duty inside the markets hardly visit the markets and take action against the sopo vendors, who have encroached upon the spaces meant for customers to move freely,” alleged one house wife, who had lodged a complaint of pickpocketing with the police.
It is learnt that the Margao Municipal Council had proposed a comprehensive policy for the development and maintenance of passages and it was to be put up before the council for clearance and approval. However, so far no decision was taken.
According to the locals, effective implementation and maintenance of passages by the municipality and police will make life a lot easier for customers to move in the market freely.
