MMC employees to stop work today

MARGAO, SEPT 2
The Margao Municipal Council and the employees under the banner of Goa Municipal Employees Association are on a collision course with the employees deciding to stop all work in the civic body on Friday till the municipal administration clears the salary of an Upper Divisional Clerk (UDC).
Association leader Anil Shirodkar told Herald that the garbage trucks would not come out of the garage on Friday morning for the collection of daily garbage. He said other employees will also stop all work on Friday in protest against the Council decision to withhold the salary of the UDC.
Shirodkar said the employees had approached the Chief Officer Y B Tawde seeking clarifications on the decision to withhold the UDC’s salary, but there was no change in the stance of the Municipal administration. “How can the administration withhold the salary of an employee on the pretext that the employee did not submit documents? The employee too has a family to look after and there is no justification for the municipal administration to withhold anyone’s salary”, Shirodkar added.
Replying to a question, he said the employee would not rest till the municipal administration releases the salary of the employee.
Sources in the know said the Municipal drivers owing allegiance to the employees association are unlikely to venture out for garbage collection tomorrow morning.
The MMC Chief Officer had withheld the salary of the UDC after the Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho put up a note directing him to withhold salary to the employee. In the note, the MMC Chairperson contended that the employee had delayed in compiling the data of all the daily wage workers who had worked in the civic body from 1996.
Shirodkar, however, attributed the delay to the tedious work of compiling the data and the fact that that some of the records were not readily available due to the shifting of the documents during the building renovation work.
