Shortage of beds haunts Hospicio yet again

Bed shortage has come back to haunt the Hospicio authorities once again, as patients were made to lie on make-shift accommodation on the floor in the hospital corridors.
A couple of patients were found occupying the hospital floor for want of space. A helpless Hospicio administration accommodated the patients on the floor instead of turning them back home or to private hospitals.
In fact, it is not uncommon to find patients accommodated n the corridors due to space constraints. Hospicio officials in private admitted that the hospital finds it increasingly difficult to accommodate patients during the monsoon season, when the admission rate is on the higher side. “The hospital faces problems during this part of the year. We are forced to provide makeshift accommodation to the patients on the floor for want to space. But, at the same time, the poor patients seek medication from the hospital despite the bed shortage”, remarked a doctor.
He said cases are not uncommon when patients refuse to share beds, leaving the Hospicio staff to accommodate the patients on the floor. “The number of patients visiting Hospicio has increased manifold, but the bed number has remained static. Despite the constraints, we do not refuse admission in the hospital”, the doctor added.
The new district hospital for south Goa is under construction at Margao. But, if sources are to be believed, it may take couple of years more before the hospital takes concrete shape.
