PONDA: Several shop owners on Thursday complained to Ponda Municipal Council that the ongoing sewerage work at Varkhandem was creating mud and dust pollution due to lack of planning.
The shopkeepers at Curtarkar Commercial Arcade said they were surprised to see their premises full of mud and added that they were facing this nuisance for the past three years.
Rohidas Shirodkar and other shopkeepers after inspecting saw that the mud was flowing from the sewerage chamber. The Sewerage Department is digging the road for constructing of sewerage chamber, however, as they find underground water, they pumped it out and release it into the road side gutter.
As the gutters are choked up in absence of pre-monsoon work, the muddy water released is over flowing in front of open premises of the shops making the area slippery and dangerous to the life of the locals and visitors to the shops.
After complaining, Chief Officer Navanath Naik directed the engineer of Sewerage Department to stop the work and clean the premises.
Sewerage Engineer Pradeep Gaude said, “90 Per cent of sewerage work is completed. As Ponda is full of underground water tables, while digging, the mud gets mixed with water, which we are forced to clear.”
He said road digging will continue till May 15 and thereafter road restoration including patch work will be done where sewerage chambers are dug.
