MARGAO: The dust kicked up by vehicles plying on Margao roads, which have been damaged by the heavy rainfall, is causing air pollution and posing severe health hazard for the people.

Bright sunny weather after a long spell of heavy showers has exposed the damaged roads and triggered severe dust pollution in the commercial city of Margao. Commuters and the locals have demanded immediate intervention from the Public Works Department (PWD) to give immediate relief to the public and shop owners.
It has been witnessed that the damaged roads due to the heavy rains are yet to be repaired and the department is waiting for a dry spell to fill the potholes which can be identified in several places in the Margao. The loose material hasn’t been cleared from the roads, resulting in severe dust pollution.
Citizens of Margao told Herald that this dust, which is a very serious health hazard, has raised serious issues.
The PWD had not yet removed the potholes dotting the National Highway passing through the commercial city, especially next to Auda Viegas’ house, Kohinoor junction at Margao Municipal Building, at Margao Post Office and also at Eagle Warehouse, near Old Collectorate building. Loads of dust kicked up by the vehicles passing on these roads is causing severe hardships for the people.
Savio Coutinho, former Chairperson of Margao Municipality told Herald that the hardships faced by Madgaonkars with respect to bad roads has become a perennial cycle over the past several years
Explaining his statement, Coutinho said, “Hotmix carpet is laid prior to the monsoon, which gets washed out during the monsoons. Thereafter people complain about potholes, so the potholes are filled up hastily. These repaired potholes open up again when vehicles ply over it, which causes dust pollution when it is not raining.”
“This dust pollution becomes a severe problem not only to the pedestrians and motorists, but also to the people working or visiting the commercial premises along these damaged roads, ” he lamented.
