PANJIM: Coming down heavily on the building lobby working in violation of Building and Other Construction Workers Act, Directorate of Labour Welfare has issued nearly 61 show-cause notices to builders and contractors over the last two months.
The stern action follows the tragic Canacona building collapse incident wherein 31 people had died in January. Following the incident, labour department inspected 257 construction sites, wherein illegalities and irregularities were observed by the labour inspectors.
It was observed that builders or contractors had failed to maintain register of labourers, get identification certificates, made them work over 9 hours without extra wages, failed to give weekly off, with no proper sanitation, food and water etc.
