MARGAO: Burglars continued to make merry in the commercial capital while Margao police grope in the dark over the spate of thefts and burglaries.
In yet another daring daylight burglary, unknown burglars struck gold when they successfully lifted away gold ornaments from an apartment in a busy locality at Madel on Thursday. The value of the stolen gold is put by the owner at a whopping Rs 25-30 lakhs. The miscreants are also believed to have stolen 2000 Qatari Riyals, which works out Rs 25,000.

The incident occurred when the inmates had left the house at around 11 am for a birthday party at Ambora-Loutolim. When the inmates returned home at around 4.30 in the evening, they found to their shock and surprise that the lock on the gate of the entrance door of the second floor apartment missing. Their suspicions grew as they found the lock on the main door broken and their worst fear came true after the owner Benica De Gama found that all the gold ornaments housed in the cupboard stolen by the miscreants.
“The miscreants left untouched the laptop on the table. Nor did the lift the cameras from the cupboard, but have decamped with all the gold ornaments valued at Rs 30 lakh”, she said. The burglary have lifted all the gold from the apartment belonging to Benita, her son, daughter-in-law and grandchild.
The family immediately intimated the incident to the Margao police, who this round, preferred to requisition the services of a police dog and finger print experts to assist them in the investigations.
Incidentally, the burglary comes three days after a similar daring day light burglary in the busy Hari Mandir locality at Malbhat, where the burglars decamped with gold ornaments valued over Rs seven lakhs after the inmates had headed for Panjim for personal work.
While the Margao police were initially blaming a chaddi gang behind the spate of burglaries in the city, these two daylight burglaries have baffled the men-in-uniform as they have failed to solve a single burglary case reported in the city in recent times.
