Panchayat members descend on Electricity Dept seeking respite from power outages across Velim

MARGAO: Elected panchayat members from various villages in Velim constituency marched to the Margao office of the Electricity Department on Friday, demanding an immediate resolution to the persistent power supply issues. Led by Velim MLA Cruz Silva, the members, including Sarpanchas and Deputy Sarpanchas, met with Rajeev Samant, Superintendent of Engineer at Power House, Aquem-Margao, to address the hardships faced by villagers due to the frequent power cuts.

During the meeting, the elected members discussed the incomplete pre-monsoon electricity works and expressed disappointment with the unreliable power supply. They highlighted the recent surge in power interruptions, causing inconvenience to all villages in Velim constituency. Sarpanch Valentino Barretto of Deussua-Chinchinim panchayat stated, “Forget about the lack of power supply in the daytime, people are facing inconvenience even during the nighttime due to frequent power outages. Many times, people are forced to wait for the power supply for hours and hours, and it has become difficult to manage, especially during this heatwave.”

The officials listened to the grievances of the panchayat members, who also raised concerns about the incomplete pre-monsoon works related to electricity in their respective villages. They pointed out that the electricity infrastructure improvements were yet to be completed in many areas.

The elected representatives demanded the expeditious implementation of the proposed underground cabling project in Velim constituency. MLA Silva stated that the Superintendent Engineer assured them of a prompt resolution and a smooth power supply for the area. “A proposal has been submitted to the Electricity Department with regard to underground cabling. Electricity problems will be reduced once the underground cabling is done,” he stated.

The officials acknowledged the concerns raised by the elected representatives and pledged to address the issues promptly. The elected members expressed hope that the proposed underground cabling project would alleviate the persistent power supply problems in the Velim constituency, providing residents with a reliable and uninterrupted power source.
