PANJIM: The fitment of digital meters on taxis in the State will now start from May 15, informed Transport Department sources.
Earlier, the process of fitting digital meters for taxis was scheduled to start from May 1 but had to be deferred due to surge in COVID-19 cases. Also the National Informatics Centre (NIC) software engineers developing backend applications were under home isolation.

Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho had said that the government had no alternative but to install digital meters on taxis as per the directives of the High Court of Bombay at Goa, failing which it would amount to Contempt of Court.
The government has decided to provide free digital meters on taxis and the taxi operators will get 50 per cent of the cost when they fit the meters and remaining 50 per cent when they recharge the meters at the end of the first year. The government would spend Rs 34 crore on purchase of digital meters.
The government is also getting the NIC monitoring and server system and digital footprint ready for the daily movement of taxis via GPS and the exact fares.
