VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) chairperson Tara Kerkar and vice chairman Saifullah Khan were voted out of office in a no-confidence motion on Monday.
Presiding officer, Margao Deputy Collector Umakant Korkankar, while conducting the proceedings read the resolution moved by 11 councillors alleging that Kerkar and Khan are involved in illegalities and as such have lost the confidence of the other 11 councillors.
Surprisingly, none of the councillors who supported Kerkar and Khan spoke against the no-confidence motion.
However, while speaking against the motion, Kerkar stated that to level such charges, she didn’t even get a chance to conduct any council meeting. “I was in the chair only for few days and except for signing salary vouchers, no business transaction took place as I did not conduct any council meeting,” said Kerkar.
Kerkar said she had been very supportive in the past and supported all the past chairpersons and has even brought to their notice about the illegalities taking place in the council and market area.
Kerkar requested the councillors to give her at least six months time to prove her ability; however, she added that if the councillors are not in her favour then she has no regrets.
Presiding officer Korkankar put the motion forward and requested the councillors to vote for or against the motion by show of hands. Eleven out of the 20 councillors who had signed the no-confidence motion voted in favour, while the other nine councillors failed to raise their hands against the motion and voted out Kerkar and Khan from the post of chairperson and vice chairperson respectively.
The MMC, after a period of almost 14 years, has appointed an administrator till Friday, when the elections to elect a new chairperson and vice chairperson will be held.
