Panchayats dismayed at Centre’s equal disbursement of funds

MARGAO: Panchayats have expressed dismay at the Central government’s disbursement of uniform funds across panchayats and pointed out that they were told that funds would be distributed according to the area and population size of the village.

Goa Panchayati Raj Union (GPRU) convenor Santan Rodrigues stated that panchayats had gone to great lengths to constitute village-level committees to prepare village development plans, and that larger panchayats haven’t received enough funds to carry out planned development works. He added that each panchayat had received approximately Rs 2.7 lakh from the Central finance commission.
Rodrigues also commented on the recent development where two executive engineers, Margao Municipal Council’s Surendra Gaonkar and Water Resources Department’s Basvaraj Pujari, have been deputed to the South Goa Zilla Panchayat on an additional charge to accord financial sanctions for the technical estimates.
He called for the government to streamline the ZP by appointing adequate number of executive engineers to prepare the estimates for the development works. He added that the sanction of funds and deputation of EEs is not enough if there are not enough field engineers to prepare the estimates.
