BICHOLIM: The Congress on Friday demanded that the Central government promulgate an ordinance to restart mining.
The demand was made during a special meeting the Congress leaders had with the mining dependents at Sanquelim on Friday.
“Mining is a major issue in the State; now it is more than two years that people are suffering. The Central government should take immediate action so that mining resumes in the State,” former Union law minister Ramakant Khalap said and questioned, “If they can come up with an ordinance for triple talaq, why can’t they do the same for the well being of the Goans?”
Goa desk in-charge, Chellakumar stated that the Congresss party supports legal mining in the State. “We will always be with the mining dependents and will support every agitation. Even if tomorrow there is a need to go to Delhi we will support the Goans,” Chellakumar said.
Former chief minister Digambar Kamat claimed that the entire Goan economy has crippled due to mining ban. “There is effect even on Margao and wholesale markets due to mining closure. If this continues, it would only have serious impact on the lives of the people,” Kamat warned.
The State Congress President Girish Chodankar demanded that the State government resign if it is unable to solve the mining issue.
The Congress leaders also met the mining dependents at Honda and Baye Surla.
