MARGAO: In a daring daylight burglary, unknown miscreants struck gold at Cavorim-Chandor when the
inmates had gone to attend the Church services on Good Friday.
The burglars are believed to have decamped with gold ornaments and cash, all worth around Rs 6.5
lakhs.
The incident occurred when the house owner Titiano Fernandes (61) along with wife Dumatin, son Frieze
and daughter had headed for the Church after locking the house at around 4 pm. When the inmates
returned home at around 7.30 pm, they were shocked and surprised to find the cupboard door wide
open. Upon inquiry, they found that the steel cupboard door open, while the middle door and the safe
lock damaged.
The burglars managed to lay their hands on cash amounting to Rs 40,000, besides gold ornaments,
including three necklace sets, three bracelets, 10 finger rings, gold chains, a mangalsutra and other
ornaments.
Titiano, who runs a bar and restaurant near his house, told the police that the miscreants effected entry
into the house by removing the roof tiles, while the made good their escape through the rear door. “I had
locked the door and the cupboard and carried the keys. But, the miscreants effected entry inside by
removing the roof tiles”, he told the police.
Maina Curtorim Police station in-charge, PI Gurudas Kadam informed that the police immediately
requisitioned the services of a sniffer dog, besides finger print experts to assist in the investigations.
“The expert has managed to take some prints. We are investigating into the case”, PI Kadam said.
He said the police are trying to find out whether the family suspects the hand of any person behind the
incident since it appeared to be a well planned burglary executed when the victim and his family headed
for the Church. The police are investigating.
