When the media sought to know D’Souza’s reaction to the demand made by the Margao City Fathers to transfer the MMC chief officer from Margao, he said he has neither the power to appoint the chief officer nor to effect his transfer.
In fact, D’Souza went a step ahead pointing out that the posting and transfers of Municipal Chief Officers are effected by the Personnel department headed by the chief minister.
Asked to comment on the request by the Margao Municipal Councillors to transfer the MMC chief officer, D’Souza shot back “different people come with different requests. But, I do not transfer the chief officers. Since the Margao Chief Officer is an IAS officer, I did not post him and I also cannot transfer him. I have no power to remove him from office. Only the personnel department head by the chief minister can effect the transfer,” D’Souza added.
The deputy chief minister’s stand assumes significance in view of the demand by the Margao City Fathers to get the chief officer transferred from Margao and an equally vociferous demand by the residents of Margao opposing Naveen’s transfer from MMC.
