PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has refused to extend parole of nearly a dozen prisoners including murder convicts, all of whom had sought an extension citing overcrowded Colvale Jail.

The prisoners including Rohan Dhungat and Ryan Fernandes, during the hearing, submitted to the court that the jail is already overcrowded and it was virtually impossible for the jail authorities to maintain social distancing among the inmates.
The court while disposing of the petitions, held that the parole will have to come to an end, as recommended by the High-Powered Committee. The petitioners have thus been ordered to surrender themselves before the jail authorities to complete their remaining sentence period, on December 23, 2020 before 6 pm, which is when their parole ends.
Additional Public Prosecutors Mahesh Amonkar, Pravin Faldessai and Sagar Dhargalkar submitted to the High Court that Goa has already apprised the Apex Court, of the safeguards the State has taken and has also, later, taken all the steps as directed by the SC. In this context, they assured the High Court that the State as well as the jail authorities have been conscious of the risks, and that they have already taken adequate remedial measures in this regard.
