PANJIM: The Santa Cruz Block Congress Committee has urged the authorities concerned to immediately conduct site inspection of the area near under-construction District Court building at Merces on priority basis and to take urgent measures to release the stagnated water and prevent breeding of mosquitoes so as to prevent/control the spread of vector borne diseases in the area.
Santa Cruz Block Congress Committee president John Nazareth said that there was apprehension in the minds of the residents of Merces that the stagnated water in the field due to under-construction of new District Court building can become a major breeding ground for mosquitoes and there could a major outbreak of vector-borne diseases like malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, etc, which had many a times proved to be fatal.

He stated that the public was aware that the Directorate of Health Services was taking a lot of measures by deputing its officials in residential areas and educating people about the precautions they were required to take to prevent stagnation of water in coconut shells, flower pots, etc. The efforts taken by the Health Department will go in vain in case steps are not taken to release the said water stagnated in the khazan land/fields on priority basis.
Nazareth has written to the North Goa District Collector, Primary Health Centre, Chimbel and the Merces Village Panchayat. According to him, the District Magistrate and the directorate of health services had enough powers to take urgent steps to prevent the outbreak of the epidemic.
