Although the “Swacch Bharat campaign’ has started, certain residents on Subraya Naik road are defying the government’s good motives and openly flouting the law. Age old heritage trees which are public property have been brazenly cut over the last two days openly by a citizen and dumped in a huge heap on the roadside. A workshop in the vicinity dumps wood shavings regularly. A couple of months back, a huge pile of mud was dumped there from a couple of houses being repaired. The place has consequently become a haven for stray animals. It is shocking that all this is happening about 20mts from the Damodar Sal, Old Market (Heritage site where Swami Vivekananda stayed during his visit to Goa). This is creating a nuisance to all devotees visiting the temple as well as a public menace. All this is happening right under the noses of the municipal authorities, who have repeatedly turned a deaf ear in spite of numerous complaints by us, concerned citizens. It is my sincere hope that the concerned authorities take due note, and after taking due action against these erring citizens, clear the debris on a priority basis since the monsoons are around the corner.
