MARGAO: A joint inspection of River Sal was conducted along with Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas and officials of concerned departments, on Monday.
The main objective of the inspection was to assess the ongoing work at River Sal, be it desilting of the river or proposed laying of sewage connection and to see that there is no flooding of areas alongside the river during the monsoon.

Speaking to media persons post inspection, Kamat said, “Care has to be taken by the government departments to ensure that there is no flooding in the monsoon, which won’t be restricted to Benaulim constituency alone but parts of Margao and other areas too.”
“We have given them instructions to remove mud at places where the path for water to flow is blocked. We asked them to do the desilting of three nullahs also before the monsoon. There is also an area near River Sal, where a retaining wall has to be constructed urgently,” Kamat said.
Viegas made an appeal to the villagers of Benaulim constituency and citizens of other constituencies to come forward if they have any concerns about the presence of weed, water hyacinths that need to be removed before the monsoon.
“There was a desilting tender given but there is also the aspect of maintenance that needs to be looked into. The idea is to save River Sal and also take action now so that there is no flooding when it starts raining,” Viegas said.
He added that the issue of the sewage line connection is being taken up with the concerned department.
