UC Benaulim lift Boris Trophy

United Club of Benaulim scored a solitary goal victory against Saligao United to emerge champions in All-Goa Boris do Rego inter-village football tournament, organised by Piedade Youth Association in collaboration with Rego Family at Maddant ground, Divar, on Sunday.
The teams were at their best displaying excellent skills. For Benaulim, the all-important goal came in 22nd minute through Charles.
Saligao United tried hard to wipe off the deficit but to their utter luck a goal eluded them.
United Club of Benaulim goalkeeper Dietmar Fernandes stood like a rock under the goal averting all the rival attacks.
Chief guest Savio Messias, GFA secretary, gave away the cash prizes of Rs 10,000 and Rs 7,000 and trophies to winners and runners-up respectively in the presence of late Boris’ father, Urban do Rego, Goltim-Navelim sarpanch Mario Pinto and Prakash Pereira.
Messias lauded the efforts of Mario Aguiar, SAG coach and Kanan Priolker, U-16 coach, Vasco Sports Club for youth development in football in the village.
Following individual prizes were awarded: Best defender – Lionel (Benaulim). Best striker – Dannies Fernandes (Benaulim). Best half – Trevor (Saligao). Best player of the tournament – Carlos(Benaulim). Promising player of the tournament – Matthew (PYA, Divar). First goal scorer of the final – Charles (Benaulim). Best disciplined player – Judas (Saligao) and best goalkeeper Dietmar Fernandes (Saligao).
Two surprise prizes were also given to players born on late Boris do Rego’s birthday – which were claimed by Steven Fernandes and Filomeno Fernandes of Benaulim.
For added attraction, 100 and 200m races were held for local youth, in which Shuban Pedneker, Leon Pereira, Neon Cruz; and Shuban Pedneker, Darryl Vaz, Siddesh Naik bagged the first three places in respective categories.
The tournament was held in memory of Boris do Rego, who was the victim of Mumbai 26/11 terrorists attack.
