BICHOLIM: The junction at the two bridges at Bicholim, near ‘Setu Sangam’ has become a death trap with the people claiming that the authorities are not noticing the confusions taking place due to poor sign boards.
There are two main bridges near the KTC bus stand which are the only connecting link between Bicholim and Sanquelim. Earlier, there was only one old bridge and all the traffic was passing over the same bridge till the new bridge was constructed.
After the construction of the new bridge, both the bridges were declared as one way but the authorities failed to erect proper and visible sign boards due to which there is confusion. Even when the sign boards were placed, they proved to be not of much use, as the commuters, especially from Karnataka and other states fail to see the sign boards and proceed directly through the new bridge.
“This is a common sight on the new bridge as most of the vehicles from Karnataka that come from Belgaum and plying towards Mapusa directly enter the new bridge which is demarcated as one way,” said Tejas Khedekar from Bicholim adding, “this is very dangerous and there is always a possibility of an accident on this bridge.”
In fact, there have been already some such stray incidents on the bridge that forced the authorities to display another sign board but even that was not of much use.
The Bicholim Youth Congress recently wrote to the Traffic Cell demanding proper measures be taken to avoid untoward incident in the area.
“The existing sign boards are not visible due to which the vehicles from outside Bicholim go into the no-entry zone and cause accidents. We request to put road divider at the junction as the vehicles coming from Mapusa also take sharp turn for going towards Industrial Estate causing accidents,” the letter read.
