SANGUEM: The duo of Ajay Kumar and Narayan Shah both natives of Bihar were beaten and thrashed by the locals from Rivona Sanguem after they were suspiciously charged with the robbery of gold mangalsutra from an aged woman from the village.
The video of the woman beating the duo with slippers has gone viral on social media since Monday evening.
Sources informed that the incident took place in the afternoon hours at Baagwada Rivona when the duo on the pretext of polishing gold ornaments entered the house of Avita Purnanand Naik and convinced her in handing over her mangalsutra for polishing.
Believing the duo, Naik reportedly handed over the mangalsutra to the accused persons.
However, instead of polishing the mangalsutra and giving it a shine, the duo started moving out of the house which made Naik to doubt over the genuineness of the work which was alleged to be done by the duo.
Sensing trouble, the woman alerted the other villagers in the locality by which time the duo were already reported to have vanished from the locality. However, the villagers managed to catch hold of the duo while trying to escape from the village. The elderly woman who identified the duo, later gave them a good bashing first with slaps and later with slippers.
Incidentally, this is not the first incident of chain snatching incident reported in Sanguem region. Earlier last week, the chain snatchers had attempted to rob an old lady at Tarimol Sanguem. Similar incident was also reported some 15 days back at Pontemoll Curchorem.
Meanwhile police sources at Quepem police station informed that no offence is registered as of now with respect to the Rivona incident as they were arrested by the locals on suspicion.
The duo are, however, undergoing treatment at Hospicio Hospital Margao informed sources at Quepem Police Station.
