VASCO: Citizens from Mormugao Municipality are irked by the reluctance of the municipal authorities seeing garbage pilling up in their vicinity. People also blame negligence of the politicians towards resolving the salary issue of the municipality workers.

The municipality administrative work had come to a grinding halt following a three-day strike called by the MMC workers and employees. Most prominent was the garbage issue because of the prevailing foul smell from the garbage and wet waste which has piled up and is overflowing all over the municipal area.
“It is the duty of the Urban Development Minister to intervene and sort out the salary issue of the municipality employees. I feel the political clashes between the Mormugao MLA and the Vasco MLA have something to do about this inaction,” said Nitin Phaldessai of Goa Suraksha Manch.
He further said that he will ask people to collect the piled up garbage from their houses and dump it before the house of the Urban Development Minister to make him understand the seriousness of the matter.
Another social worker Vinod Kinalekar from New Vaddem area also said the issue needs to be tackled soon before it goes out of the hand.
“The wet waste such as fish and meat residuals will start stinking after two days and if they are not picked up then it will be difficult for people to stay at home,” Kinalekar added.
Liby Mendonca, a special educator from Sada area, cautioned that stinking waste will further invite vector borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid which could prove deadly.
“it has been also observed that the stray animals will also be going to feed on the wet waste and plastic which may also prove fatal to them. Therefore to avoid these problems the authorities must resolve the salary issue immediately,” said Mendonca.
Aqeef Sayad, from Kharewado said there should be mechanism to give them timely salaries.
“Directorate of Municipal administration should look into the matter soon and should make workers resume their duties so that the waste littered all over could be cleared soon,” Sayad said.
