Cyclonic Storm Hamoon initiated its landfall process around midnight and is presently positioned over coastal Bangladesh, approximately 40 km east-southeast of Chittagong, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in an update on Wednesday.
The IMD expects the storm to continue its trajectory, moving northeastward and losing intensity within the next six hours, eventually downgrading into a depression during the subsequent six hours. In a previous update, the IMD had stated that the landfall process had begun, and the storm was likely to weaken into a cyclonic storm while crossing the Bangladesh coast to the south of Chittagong within a few hours. The storm’s wind speeds were anticipated to range from 80 to 90 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 100 kmph.

In preparation for the impact of Cyclone Hamoon, coastal districts in Bangladesh have put evacuation plans into action to safeguard residents. Authorities have relocated numerous residents to secure shelters as a precautionary measure. Directives have also been issued to suspend cargo handling at Chattogram Port and halt river transport in southern Bangladesh.
Over the past two days, the northeastern states have experienced a change in weather conditions as the cyclone followed its path. The IMD predicts isolated heavy rainfall in Mizoram, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in Tripura for Wednesday. The intensity of rainfall is projected to decrease by October 26, with light to moderate rainfall forecasted in a few areas across the region.
The weather department has also issued a cautionary advisory to fishermen, advising them against venturing into the northern part of the Bay of Bengal and along the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, Bangladesh, and northern Myanmar on Tuesday and Wednesday.
