Freedom fighters begin fast unto death, demand govt jobs for children

PANJIM: The veteran freedom fighters, Suresh Parodkar and Nagesh Chari along with the children of their colleagues began fast unto death at historic Azad Maidan demanding government jobs to their children, on Friday. 

Children of Freedom Fighters Association have been demanding that the government should provide jobs to them on priority.

Association President Shivaji Shet said that the government is yet to absorb 97 children of freedom fighters; some of them have already crossed 50 years. 

He said late chief minister Manohar Parrikar had assured that the children of freedom fighters will be given government jobs. As per that three per cent of the jobs in every department are reserved for them 

The association members are on dharna since January 4 demanding a written assurance from the government. 

Meanwhile, the Opposition slammed government’s insensitive approach towards the children, whose parents contributed to the State Liberation from Portuguese colonial rule.

Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat, who visited the protesting children, urged the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant to intervene and ensure that all efforts are made to accommodate them in government service. 

“If needed, let government bend rules to pay a befitting tribute to the brave hearts, who sacrificed everything for Goa Liberation movement,” he said.
