PANJIM: Quraishi Meat Traders Association (QMTA) has filed a writ petition in the High Court of Bombay at Goa against the Union Ministry of Environment’s notification banning trading of cattle for slaughter.
Speaking to Herald, QMTA President Manna Bepari said that on Monday morning a writ petition has been filed before the High Court and will be heard on Wednesday morning.
Stating that it is a three point petition against the Centre’s notification, Bepari
said, “We have consulted all the stakeholders related and concerned with the trade, right from the farmers to the consumers and have concluded that the matter has to be dealt with legally as that is our last resort.”
He further said that the implementation of the notification will lead to a total collapse of the beef business in the State.
“The first point is that the notification states that cattle should not be sold for purpose of slaughter, which means our trade will shut down. Secondly, inter-state trade of cattle is also banned in which circumstances we will not have any cattle in Goa as we have been importing cattle from neighbouring states. Thirdly, cattle should not be provided for sacrifice, which means that we will be denied our age old tradition of sacrificing cattle and feeding the poor during the celebration of Eid,” Bepari added.
