PANJIM: Cyber Crime Cell of Goa Police have busted an fake international call centre, in which accused persons were cheating US citizens by pretending themselves as executives of one of the biggest online retailers — Amazon.
Two masterminds Mahammad Ramji M Ghanchi alias Roy Fernandes and Santosh Kadam are among 16 racketeers arrested for the offense, the police said.
While eight accused including the two masterminds were arrested in the intervening night on June 9-10, from a rented bungalow in Old Goa; eight female employees were taken into custody on Friday.
“At the said call centre, the accused and his staff were using the call centre to impersonate as Amazon operatives and defrauded several US citizens to share confidential gift card details of values ranging from 500 to 1,000 USD in exchange of restoring wallet balances from their allegedly hacked Amazon accounts,” DGP Jaspal Singh said.
