“After Government declare 16000 liters of free water scheme there is feel good atmosphere among common man as he expect a zero monthly bill but clueless how much unit it means,” said a Pondaite.

When educated citizens with family of four persons were asked about the free water scheme benefits, many of them said when they checked past bills it was found that they consume average around 22 to 25 units which means one single members consumes above 200 liter per day which means a family consumes above 800 liter a day and 22000 to 25000 liter per month.

Sandesh Naik having family members of four said his average consumption is 25000 liter per month. “The government wants to give free water then it should provide at least 200 liters free water to every single member of all families in Goa and that if the overall consumption of a family exceeds the limit then only they should be charged for the extra units,” said Naik

They further claim that when government declares schemes it should be first for upliftment of the poor and if the schemes are for all then its criteria should not been limited to four family members. That means rich person with two-member family would benefit from it but poor with more than six members would pay bills.

Ramdas Naik from Ponda said, “This scheme would benefit mostly person with three members in the family but many Goans having big joint families this scheme of no use for them. It is just eyewash. At the end of September Goans would get hefty bills due to increased tariff.”

Naresh Naik from Ponda said “If government expect a family means four members then it is wrong. It would just include father, mother and two children. It would be called a nuclear family. In joint Hindu community, family means grandfather, grandmother, father and mother and at least two to three children then the total goes to seven. But in Goa traditionally joint family members have more than ten to fifteen members and it would be injustice to them.”

Mahadev Naik said that government instead of giving vague promise should think on bringing down sky rocketed prices of petrol, gas, diesel and other commodities.
