PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Wednesday commutes life sentence of convict Vijay Karbotkar of Britona and sentenced him to undergo 10 years rigorous imprisonment, for committing culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Karbotkar, who was one of the accused convicted and sentenced for murdering, had filed an appeal before the High Court challenging the judgement and conviction dated May 11, 2022 by the Additional Sessions Court, Mapusa in a murder case. He was sentenced to undergo life imprisonment and to pay fine of Rs one lakh and in default to undergo further imprisonment for a period of three years.

Arguing on behalf of the accused, senior advocate Saresh Lotlikar brought to the notice of the High Court that all eye-witnesses’ testimonies were tentative and were not reliable and that no witnesses including eye-witnesses stated that the said accused was the author of such injuries.
He told the court that depositions of eyewitnesses were full of major contradictions and omissions and that alleged incident occurred on the spur of the moment which culminated in a sudden fight.
