MARGAO: The South Goa District Hospital is decided on Wednesday to continue function as a dedicated COVID hospital and Hospicio District Hospital to continue functioning at the old premises for some more time as the authorities deem to decommission Goa Medical College as part of the same objective.
Goa Medical College Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar under whom the South Goa District Hospital is presently functioning since September 9 2020 since it was declared to be a dedicated COVID hospital, said the first priority will be to remove GMC of hospitals dedicated for the COVID patients.

“We have various other wards at GMC including Intensive Care Units (ICU) and we shall have to first decommission this hospital for COVID patients, particularly the ICU for COVID patients,” he said while disclosing that a good ICU has been set up at the South Goa District Hospital the COVID patients.
Every day on average 50 COVID cases are being reported hence it is not possible to decommission the South Goa District Hospital, revealed the authorities.
Medical Superintendent of Hospicio, Dr Deepa Correia Afonso said they are ready to shift to new premises as and when the government decides upon it and further added that they are also attending to patients at the old premises.
“Ultimately it is for the government to decide and I cannot say anything as presently the new premises of the district hospital are under GMC dean and I have nothing to do with it,” she said.
Incidentally as on date there are 54 COVID patients undergoing treatment at the South Goa District Hospital premises which according to Health Minister Vishwajit Rane will also be called Hospicio.
