State govt to demolish lighthouse near Kala Academy

PANJIM: The State government will soon demolish the lighthouse located at riverfront near Kala Academy at Campal, Panjim and reconstruct it to facilitate safe navigation for mariners. 

The Captain of Ports department has obtained government approval for demolition of existing structure subject to construction of a new structure simultaneously.

The existing structure is still operational. The particular lighthouse is crumbling down; it is unsafe as there is no stability to the existing structure, it was informed.

The new construction has been proposed at the same location, as the structure ought to be in a navigational line of sight.

Captain of Ports Vikas Naik Gaunekar informed that the plan for construction of a new lighthouse is under preparation with the Public Works Department (PWD).

“The plan is at the drawing stage, and once estimates are prepared and subsequently with the approval of the government the works will be tendered,” Gaunekar said.

He said that the State government may consider seeking funds for reconstruction of the lighthouse from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), New Delhi.

The CoP said that new construction would be made in a way that it serves the purpose of navigational channels and also become an attractive tourist hotspot in the capital city.
