MARGAO: Goa Congress President Girish Chodankar and Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavalekar have written a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister for Roads and Highways, Nitin Gadkari to name the third Mandovi bridge and second Zuari bridge after late Dayanand Bandodkar, Goa’s First Chief Minister and late Dr Jack de Sequeira, Goa’s first leader of Opposition
In the letter, they highlighted the contributions of the two Goan leaders and asserted that their urge reflects the popular sentiments of Goans. “Naming bridges after them will also give these pioneers of Goa, due recognition which we owe to them. Your step would be well appreciated by every Goemkar.”, they stated.
The bridges over rivers and other water bodies signify the joining of two separate entities. Naming them (these new bridges over Mandovi and Zuari respectively) after eminent Goans of yesteryears would be the perfect bridge for Goans connecting to their past and help future generations remember to remember the history and motivate future generations to cherish the life and contribution of eminent Goans who shaped the destiny of this State with its unique identity.
Interestingly, the Panchayat of Camurlim in Salcete has already sent a resolution to the President and Prime minister of India making the same request. The resolution was proposed by Panchayat member Ashwinkumar Naik who in a video message stated that the present leader of Bandodkar’s party Sudin Davlikar as well as Goa Forward leader Vijai Sardesai, who celebrated the Opinion Poll’s 50th Anniversary last year, should make the request with the central government.
