Deputy Collector Ajit Panchwadkar stated that the PIs had informed him that no places in the south were allowed to slaughter animals. He sought a list of places in South Goa where illegal slaughter had taken place and where offences had been registered against the owners for activities like fat extraction.
Officials stated that the police were asked how to tackle the upcoming Qurbani season given the sensitive nature of the subject and the lack of permissions for animal slaughter in the district.
As per the NGT’s ad-interim measures in a case between the Animal Rescue Squad and the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on behalf of the State, the government was asked to take steps to ensure the arrest of illegal slaughtering at places which did not have permissions.
“In all such cases, the State may issue prohibitory orders to arrest the public nuisance under section 133 of the criminal procedure code, of which violation shall be taken cognizance of as and when noticed,” read the order issued by Justice Kingaonkar.
